A message from Cllr John Caller, the Mayor of Gravesham.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh. On behalf of Gravesham Borough Council and the people of our Borough, I offer my deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and her family.

As a mark of our respect, the Union Flag on the roof of the Civic Centre is being flown at half mast.

We will be opening an online Book of Condolence on our website from 9am tomorrow morning, Saturday 10 April. It will remain open until 5pm on the day after His Royal Highness’s funeral. Once closed, it will be passed to the Kent History and Library Centre where it will be stored in perpetuity.

If you are unable to access the online Book of Condolence, you can post a message for inclusion to us at the Civic Centre, Windmill Street, Gravesend, DA12 1AU

Buckingham Palace has also opened an online Book of Condolence which can be signed at www.royal.uk

I understand that many of you would like to pay your respects by leaving a floral tribute in a public place, and in normal times we would welcome this. However, as we remain in a time of restricted movement and limited numbers in terms of gatherings, I would respectfully ask that you do not do so.

Instead, you may wish to consider making a donation in His Royal Highness’s memory to the National Emergencies Trust so that it can help local charities, distribute money and support victims in combatting the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Further information is available at www.nationalemergenciestrust.org.uk.

If you live within walking distance of St Andrew’s Gardens, a small area close to the statue of Her Majesty the Queen has been set aside to receive floral tributes. Please think carefully before visiting the gardens to place a tribute and if you do so, please observe social distancing protocols and be respectful of others in attendance and other tributes that have been left.

Cllr John Caller, Mayor of Gravesham
