Updated management plan for Kent Downs AONB

 Published: 18-Oct-2021

An updated plan to conserve, protect and improve the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has been agreed by Gravesham Borough Council.

The authority is one of 12 across Kent within whose boundaries areas of the AONB fall and who have shared responsibilities for the area. In Gravesham, the AONB runs south from Shorne to Vigo,

The first Management Plan was adopted in 2004 and is regularly reviewed and updated, with the version approved by Gravesham Borough Council’s Cabinet this month running until 2026.

Key updates include:

  • Ensuring the plan is consistent with the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework
  • A greater focus on biodiversity recovery, wilding and nature-based solutions to climate change
  • Updates to reflect changes in guidance and legislation, such as the Agriculture Act
  • Updates to reflect changes and opportunities arising from Brexit
  • Identifying how landscape and partnership can take an active part in the recovery from the impact of Covid-19.

Cllr Lauren Sullivan, Gravesham Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Environment, said: “As a Borough we are lucky to have some outstanding countryside, much of which falls within the Kent Downs AONB.

“What this document recognises is that the countryside is a working environment which is evolving all the time.

“The AONB needs careful managing to ensure it is protected while at the same time ensuring those who make their living there, those who live within it and those who use it for recreation are able to do so responsibly and with freedom.

“It’s an important document which we must refer to when developing our own policies around planning and recreation, but which does not constrain us to anything where we feel we can do something better.

“I welcome it and look forward to seeing how it supports the AONB in future years.”
