The first 15 of more than 30 young people have started work with us as part of the national Kickstart scheme.

Kickstart offers six-month placements for young people aged between 16 and 24 who are claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long-term unemployment.

The first cohort of 15 young people from Gravesham have started work with our waste services, horticultural and housing repairs teams based at our Brookvale depot in Northfleet.

We are working with Jobcentre Plus to recruit up to 19 further young people, many of who will fill office-based roles at both Brookvale and Gravesham Civic Centre.

“Youth unemployment was already of serious concern in Gravesham before the Covid pandemic came along, and lockdown will have only exacerbated the problem,” said Cllr John Burden, Leader of the council.

“We have a long record of leading by example in tackling this and employing local young people. We have a healthy apprenticeship programme which has seen many go on to have successful careers with us and with other businesses and organisations.

“Those on our Kickstart placements will gain invaluable experience. Some may well find long term jobs or apprenticeships with us, others will have a good start to their employment CV which will help them go on and find jobs or training elsewhere.

“I welcome them all to the council and wish them the very best of luck in their future careers.”

BillieJo Gibbons, 22, from Kings Farm, Gravesend, and pictured at the top of the page has joined our Environmental department and is working as part of a small team helping to keep our parks and open spaces tidy.

“This is my first full time job and I absolutely love it,” said BillieJo. “I love being in the open air and I’d much rather be doing this than being in an office.

“I’m being given lots of training and I feel like I’m doing something important for local people.

“I am up and out of the door with a smile on my face every morning and can’t wait to get on with work.

“At the end of my placement here I hope I can get a full time job doing something similar, and I know the experience I am getting with the council will help with that.”
